Acoustiq Assassins are a trio of musicians from Pietermaritzburg. The group perform original music that is best described as contemporary, soul, indie and R&B. Catering for a cosmopolitan audience with songs in isiZulu and English, they have shared the stage with Cassper Nyovest, Nasty C, Zakes Bantwini, Dreamteam, Big Nuz, Witness the Funk, Samthing Soweto, DJ Tira, Shekinah, Sibongile Khumalo and Babes Wodumo, to name a few. Acoustiq Assassins have recently released their debut EP, Nomakanjani, which is available digitally.
DURBAN BLACK DRIFTERS
Led by writer, composer and founder of the group, Chris Ntuli, the group consists of Skhumbuzo Ngcamu, Bhamuza Nkwanyana, Nhlanhla Luthuli, Shakespeare Mhlongo, Kehla Ngcobo, Sibusiso Madonsela and Sihle Mdletshe. Occasionally they are accompanied by internationally acclaimed acoustic guitarist Madala Kunene.
Durban Black Drifters (DBD) sing Isicathamiya or Cothoza music. Formed on 13 February 1993, DBD aim to preserve, educate and promote indigenous Isicathamiya music, thereby spreading a message of peace and reconstruction, which is especially important for South Africa.
They have featured in festivals such as Splashy Fen and National Arts Festival. DBD is a SAMA Award nominee group, for their album Obababethu, and currently recording under international label Universal Music.
Mandisa Cebekhulu is a vocalist from Durban. Her musical journey began by attending poetry sessions and collaborating with poets. Mandisa then joined Iziko lamagama, an organisation in uMlazi, which focuses on performance art. She has performed at events such as Izigi, Poet in a Suit and Poetry Meets Gospel.
Thobile “NkanyeziYezulu” Mbanjwa is a Neo-African singer and songwriter. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in African Music, Dance and Drama from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
NkanyeziYezulu has performed the Bat Centre, BASCO (UKZN), Blue Room, Tshwane Hub, UKZN Jazz Centre and King Shaka International Airport, welcoming international delegates for the 2015 African Cultural Calabash.
NkanyeziYezulu is currently working on a deep tribal house project and recording the single Beautiful with producer and DJ DarQKnight.
Senzo Gumede is an exceptional Afro-Pop Alternative vocalist, performer and master of ceremonies. He first showed promise by receiving a Golden Ticket on South African Idols. In 2012, he was a backing vocalist for the ward winning Sfiso Ncwane. Senzo has performed at Poetry Africa, IBV Supercar Arts and Shopping Festival and is part of Gagasi FM’s My Connect 2019/2020.Senzo has since released an album called MaMzobe, followed by the single Nosipho that debuted in Gagasi Music Sessions’ Top 10 (November 2019). Both projects are available on all popular digital platforms. Senzo has performed alongside Felix Hophe, Mpumi, Zakwe and Zakes Bantwini.
