THEMBA MABASO was born in Stanger in KwaZulu-Natal in 1966. He grew up at Amatikulu Sugar Mill where he was exposed to books at an early age. Mr. Mabaso studied the Bachelor of Art (BAFA) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal 1987-1990). He specialized in drawing and painting. He further studied Higher Diploma in Education and has a certificate in Human Resources Management. He has extensive experience in the Arts, Culture and Heritage sector both at national and local government level where he works as the State Herald. He is a prolific writer and illustrator of children’s book. He has written more than 48 books and illustrated 15 books, of which half are self published. These books are mainly readers, some of which have been translated into other South African official languages. He is a co-owner of the Njabulo Publishers, which has been in operation since 2007. Books such as the Gimba The Red Taxi series, Imilolozelo (IsiZulu illustrated Nursery Rhymes), Wafa Nogwaja and Jomba the Porcupine are the popular titles in the Njabulo Publishers catalogue. Njabulo Publishers now boasts a large catalogue and recently launched illustrated isiZulu Poems for the young readers entitled, Izinkondlo zeNjabulo. Many of the publications have been reprinted several times.
