Durban: Creolized Creative City
The docu-drama feature film written and directed by award-winning playwright and filmmaker Ashwin Singh examines the literary scene in the eclectic city of Durban, which became Africa’s first UNESCO City of Literature in 2017. The production team visited many of Durban’s key cultural institutions and have engaged with acclaimed local artists and arts managers as well as international commentators. A fictional element intersect with the non-fictional events in the film in the filmmakers’ pursuit to trace the creative evolution of their character, Lerato Sibisi as she develops over her school years as both an observer of and participant in various cultural activities in the city. The screening will be followed by a brief description featuring Ashwin Singh, Felicity Hand and other literary figures.
