SHAFINAAZ HASSIM

Shafinaaz Hassim is a sociologist and author based in South Africa. She writes both fiction and non-fiction. Her previous works in gender studies, fiction and poetry have been commended by various awards including the SALA K Sello Duiker Award, the UJ Prize for Creative Arts and the Minara Aziz Hassim Literary Award.
Her novel, SoPhia, was adapted for stage performance in 2014. She was listed by UNESCO and the London Book Fair as one of the top 39 writers in Africa under the age of 40. Her winning contribution, The Pink Oysters, was published in the AFRICA39 anthology by Bloomsbury UK in 2014.
She is also the author of the Nisa Qamar series, which has been shortlisted for the MAHLA awards and the prestigious Sanlam Youth Literature Prize 2019.
