DESCRIPTION:Marking ninety years since Audre Lorde’s birth, as well as the thirtieth anniversary of South African democracy, this webinar explores Lorde’s legacy as a Black woman, writer, queer thinker, art activist and mother. In conversation, a group of South African and African American poets, scholars and scholar-poets will trace Lorde’s influence on their work, unfolding the complex relationships between African American culture and South African contexts. The speakers include Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Uhuru Phalafala, Phillippa Yaa De Villiers, Carole Boyce Davis, and Malika Ndlovu. The speakers will highlight the global exchanges that sustain and transform Lorde’s achievement, canvassing the diversity of writing, doing and lived experience. Her fertile production thus paves the way for creative ventures or content creation while constituting a moving record of past discrimination and passionate resistance.\n
