SUMMARY:The Rooted Legacy of Women in History
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Barbara Boswell and Makhosazana Xaba, facilitated by Sam Moodley\n \nFeminist literary scholar and creative writer Barbara Boswell is interested in black diasporic women’s writing. Her latest book titled And Wrote My Story Anyway: Black South African Women’s Novels as Feminism (Wits Univerity Press, 2020), examines how Black South African women writers use fiction as a tool of activism, a black feminist praxis and a way of transforming the self and society. It excavates the often-ignored intellectual contributions of Black women writers in South Africa, casting their novels as sites of theory production. Poet, fiction writer and academic Makhosazana Xaba, also known for her works on gender, joins this conversation. To Xaba, writing is necessary because of the historical perspective it gives to these problems, to speak and to ‘listen to the voices that come’. Xaba is also co-author of A Stranger at Home (NB Publishers, 2022), a compilation of  Noni Jabavu Memoirs. Jabavu was a South African writer and journalist, one of the first African women to pursue a successful literary career, and the first black South African woman to publish books on her life. Facilitator Sam Moodley will explore with the two women how their works are rooted in legacy and what they hope to leave behind.\n
