About Sandile Memela

Sandile Memela is a well-known journalist, novelist, cultural critic, polemicist, and public servant. He is reputed to be an intellectually provocative columnist and writer who worked for the City Press. He helped found the Sunday World in 1999 where he specialized in arts writing. 
 
A passionate critical thinker, Memela has published several books. In 2014, he published What Mother Told Us, a special tribute to ordinary women who have kept the flame of struggle alive. 
 
In the same year, he brought out Zenzele: Young Gifted & Free (Porcupine Press 2014) which is a motivational book is a practical application of the Black Consciousness tenets of self-determination. It aims to encourage youth from disadvantaged background to take control of their lives and future. 
 
This was preceded by his semi-auto-biographical novel, His Master’s Voice (Mamelang Publishing 2012.) It traces the experiences of professionals in a capitalist-controlled economy, especially in the media. 
 
Significantly, his debut book was Flowers of the Nation (Kwa-Zulu Natal University Press, 2005,) which was among the first to deal with the subject of HIV / AIDS through fiction. 
 
Memela has also contributed short stories to Soweto Inside Out (Zebra Press, 2004) and Crossing Over (Kwela Books, 1994.)  His short story, The Trap was one of the Top 20 winners in the Short Sharp Stories national competition and was published in an anthology, Bloody Satisfied. 
 
In 2019, Memela published Malume’s Painting – Living the June 1976Legacy (CEM Publishers.) that explores the issue of the integration of former exiles and how they dealt with post-traumatic stress syndrome. 
 
In 2023, he brought out Lefatshe – This Is Our Land and Mzala: A Cousin in the Struggle (CEM Publishers) that dealt with the aftermath of Marikana massacre and celebrating the contribution of critical thinkers in the liberation struggle. 
 
Memela is a Communications graduate of Fort Hare University. In addition, he holds a post-graduate in Journalism from Stellenbosch University and handful of diplomas from various universities abroad, including Wales in the UK, Maryland, and Duke in the USA.
