Dr Sipho Sithole holds a PhD in Anthropology from Wits University and is currently a Research Fellow at the Johannesburg Institute for Advanced Study (University of Johannesburg).
Dr Sithole’s recent work is a chapter contribution, titled ‘Urban outcasts and the defiant iSicathamiya music’, in an edited book volume, Sonic Signatures, in May 2023, to be published in the UK by Intellect Books. His book, Maye! Maye! The history and heritage of the Kwa Mai Mai market’, will be published by Jacana Media in March 2023.
He is currently writing a biography on the late Inkosi Simakade Mchunu of Msinga.
Dr Sithole is a scholar immersing himself in knowledge production in humanities and social sciences, focusing on telling stories from an Afrocentric perspective. His research interest is on (i) culture and society, (ii) marginality and belonging, (iii) social mobility and exclusion, (iv) decoloniality, and (v) language and identity.
