Goolam Vahed is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of KwaZulu Natal. He was born in Durban and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Durban-Westville. He obtained his PhD from Indiana University, Bloomington. He has published widely on the history of indentured labour, Indians, Muslims, and cricket in South Africa. He co-authored Blacks in Whites: A Century of Sporting Struggles in Kwazulu Natal, 1880-2002 (2002). Recent publications include Chota Motala. A Biography of Political Activism in the KwaZulu-Natal Midland (2018), A History of the Present. A Biography of Indian South Africans,1994–2019. (2019); Colour, Class and Community. The Natal Indian Congress, 1971-1994 (2021). His forthcoming book, to be released by UKZN Press in June 2023, is titled Durban’s Casbah: Bioscopes, Bunny Chows and Bolsheviks.
