Barbara Boswell is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English Literary Studies at the University of Cape Town.
An academic who positions herself at the intersection of creative and more scholarly forms of knowledge production, Barbara is the author of And Wrote My Story Anyway: Black South African Women’s Fiction as Feminism (2020) and Grace: A Novel (2017), winner of the University of Johannesburg’s Debut Creative Writing Prize. She is also the editor of Lauretta Ngcobo: Writing as the Practice of Freedom (2022).
She holds a PhD in Women’s Studies from the University of Maryland, where she studied as a Fulbright Fellow.
Before joining the Department of English Literary Studies at UCT, Barbara worked as a Lecturer at the University of Maryland and Senior Lecturer in English Studies at the University of Witwatersrand.
