Dr Gcina Mhlophe is an author and storyteller. Her works have been translated into many languages, like kiSwahili, French, Germany, Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese. She has directed her theatre plays in the USA, UK, Greenland etc. Her poetry has been interpreted into dance and classical music.


She has been awarded by 7 Universities with Honorary Doctorates. Dr Mhlophe’s awards include SAMA for her CD of Stories of Africa, OBIE Award and Joseph Jefferson Awards in the USA, Fringe First in Edinburgh Festival, MultiChoice Africa Legend Storyteller Award, USIBA Cultural legend. More recently the SAFTA Lifetime achievement award for her screen work.


She is executive director of GCINAMASIKO Arts and Heritage Trust. Her birthday, 24 October, is recognized as National Storytelling Day in South Africa.
