Dr Beryl Babsy Bonile Mchunu Xaba was born in 1970 in the village of Perth, Nyanyadu. She is the third child of Mlingisi and Smangele Mchunu. At a young age she attended the foundation phase at Mdutshulwa LP and continued to Rutland Higher Primary School. She then went to Malambune High school, all of these schools are in Nyanyadu. Dr Xaba finished her first degree at the University of Zululand, then did her honours at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and completed her masters and doctoral degree (PhD) at the University of KwaZulu Natal in isiZulu linguistics. She worked for the department of Education teaching isiZulu at Alexandra High School for 20 years. Currently, Dr Xabais a senior lecturer at Unisa in Pretoria under the Department of Linguistics in Africa. She is married to Dr Dumsani Xaba and they have four girls, Kwandiswe, Nkhensani, Nthabiseni and Lerato.
