Tiffany Willoughby-Herard

Raised in Detroit, Michigan and at the feet of black internationalist anti-apartheid revolutionaries, Dr. Tiffany Willoughby-Herard, Ph.D. (Associate Professor of African American Studies, University of California, Irvine) is President-Elect of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists; and Co-Investigator with Professor Jessica Millward on the UCI-Morgan State University (Black) Digital Humanities Pathways Program 2020-2023 Research Project. She is the author of Waste of a White Skin: The Carnegie Corporation and the Racial Logic of White Vulnerability (University of California Press 2015) and editor of Theories of Blackness: On Life and Death (Cognella 2011) as well as guest co-editor of numerous Special Issues (Theory & Event; African Identities; National Political Science Review). Her scholarly works have been published in International Journal of Critical Diversity Studies; PS: Political Science and Politics; National Political Science Review; Critical Ethnic Studies Association; Frontiers: A Journal of Womens Studies; Contemptorary; Abolition; Journal of Contemporary Thought; Politics, Groups, and Identities; Cultural Dynamics; African Identities; Social Justice; South African Review of Sociology; Kroeber Anthropological Society Papers; New Political Science; Race and Class. She is a former Editor of the National Political Science Review (2016-2020), as well as a current Book Review Editor for Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Studies and is on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Critical Ethnic Studies Association journal. Winner of the 2017 Association for the Study of Black Women in Politics Mae C. King Distinguished Paper Award on Women, Gender and Black Politics, and of the Midwest Political Science Association’s Lucius Barker Award for the Best Paper in Race and Ethnic Politics, and the Chancellor’s Award for Fostering Undergraduate Research, she is a member of the LGBTQ+ Caucus of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists and the former President of the LGBTQ+ Caucus of the American Political Science Association.
