Joe Spirit was born and raised in Hammersdale, KwaZulu-Natal.The storytelling-bug bit when he was a child, listening to his grandmother recite African folklore.
He has published three fictional works, both in isiZulu and English. They are Umthwalo Wezimfihlo (2014), The Book of Jane (2016) and Phungukani Mazulu (2019). Joe is currently working on an isiZulu fiction titles Ubumnyama Bifikile.
In 2012, his piece, And of Our Shadows Deep, won The Witness True Stories of KZN’s grand prize. In 2013 and 2015 he placed second for his pieces Darkest Noon and Single Cell respectively. In 2017 Joe, once again, clinched first place, for A Servant’s Daughter.
In 2015 he trained as a scriptwriter and then began to develop film scripts, producing them under his production company. He works as a mentor and producer for budding writers and filmmakers.
